Optimize Product Titles - Forbidden Text

Dan Barbata · 29 August 2017

When submitting your product feed to Google Shopping, Amazon Marketplace, and many other shopping channels, you should ensure that none of your products are being disqualified. There are a number of reasons this can happen, and some of them are related to your product titles. Shopping channels want product titles to be clean & clear, and this means no gimmicky text, punctuation, or typos.

In our Product Title Evaluation, we check for promotional text that could have your product disqualified from shopping channels. We call this check: Forbidden Text.

Reason for Test

Retailers sometimes include promotional information in their product titles thinking it will make their products stand out or give them an advantage. But the best thing you can do is write relevant and descriptive product titles that contain only information about the product itself. If you have a product title that contains the phrase "Free Shipping” it could get that product disqualified from showing up in the search results. We flag that promotional information as an error to be fixed.

How We Identify Errors

Google Shopping & Amazon Marketplace don’t provide exhaustive lists of what not to include in your product titles, so we’ve done our best to do the work for you. Our analysis looks for the following kinds of expressions in product titles and calls them out as errors:

  • Free Shipping
  • Clearance
  • New
  • $5 off
  • 20% off
  • Buy 1 Get 1 Free

We have a large library of both patterns and exact expressions that we look for which could be construed as being promotional information.

Here are some examples of product titles where we’ve found the Forbidden Text error, and how those titles look after being improved:
